Brooks Running took notice of what people in the community were saying about Romeo track and cross country Coach Mike Buslepp and placed him in the top 25 candidates in its Brooks Inspiring Coach of the Year contest.Romeo track and cross country The vote of confidence means Buslepp, a special education teacher, must now get the attention of as many people in the community as possible to win the voting portion of the contest that began July 24 and runs until Aug. 2. Buslepp was one of 25 finalists out of 1,300 nominated in the country. ********************** Visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/brooksrunning Click on the tab "Good coaches don't just coach. Visit the page once each day to vote until the deadline. Only one vote per day is eligible. Buslepp has been coaching at Romeo for more than five years. He ran for Warren Cousino High School and competed for Wayne State's Cross Country team from 2000-2003. He is still an active runner who has completed multiple marathons and competes in local races. As a finalist, Buslepp's team will receive $5,000 in apparel from Brooks Running and $500 toward team expenses. The final winner will receive an additional $5,000 and another $2,000 toward team expenses. Nominations came from 39 students, parents and other coaches in the community. Following is one of those nomination letters: "Coach Michael Buslepp creates a trust and personal connection with each team member that allows him to help them be successful athletes. He is just as excited for the runner who beats their personal record as the runner who wins a championship. In 2011, one of Coach Buslepp's team members was diagnosed with a rare heart condition after collapsing at an indoor track meet. After he recovered and was cleared to run, the athlete was hesitant and nervous. Coach Buslepp helped him rediscover his love for running by creating a personal training plan and personally running with the athlete to ensure he was never alone. Now he is one of the top scorers for the team." "I didn't get the most nominations (but they do) take into account the stories," said Buslepp. Buslepp said the money won through the contest will go a long way in helping out the running programs at Romeo. Money to pay for meet expenses means Buslepp would have more money to send his young athletes to camps during the summer. "We could put our fundraising money toward camp instead of actual meet expenses," he said. "We might be able to go to camp real cheap next year if we get this money or maybe not have to pay for it at all." Buslepp said he knew nothing about being nominated for the contest until he was contacted about a week ago. |
