WT, Bruce, RCS pool funds to
hold April recycling event

by KIMBERLY SCHERER
Observer Special Writer
In the midst of county-wide cuts, Bruce and Washington townships and the Romeo Community Schools have partnered for a recycling event that coincides with Earth Day activities.
The Washington Township Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to collaborate for the April 24 event, set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and split the costs with Bruce Township during its Feb. 17 meeting.
Additional cuts to Macomb County's budget means the collection of household hazardous waste has stopped. Clerk Kathy Bosheers said the three-way partnership will allow residents to recycle their hazardous waste.
She said Bruce and Washington will split the $2,000 cost of the event. Creative Recycling Solutions will be on hand to collect old stereos, cell phones, printers, computers and other e-waste. They are charging the townships $750 for their services.
Document shredding will also be part of the event. For $500, Cintas will provide the shredding service for four hours.
Romeo Community Schools is donating the use of their parking lot at the Powell Middle School/RETC parking lot. Generally there is a fee to use their parking lot.
Residents of Bruce, Washington and voting residents of the Romeo Community Schools are invited to participate for free. There are only costs for television recycling and for hard drive erasing. Both cost $10.
Bosheers said they approached the village about participating in the event but said they did not want to share costs.
On the recycle day, residents who show up for the event won't even have to exit their vehicle. Bosheers said they will drive through a tent and have their vehicle unloaded by volunteers. Bruce is providing a forklift to move the waste. The cost of the tent, forklift and a generator is $600 plus $150 for advertising costs. The schools will also provide free advertising; they will promote the recycling event in their newsletters that are sent to the students' homes.
"Our residents like this sort of thing," Supervisor Dan O'Leary said. "It keeps a lot of this refuse out of the gutters."
