WT board approves plans for
a new pizzeria on Van Dyke

      The building that once housed a liquor store across from the Washington Township municipal offices at Van Dyke will soon have a new tenant.
       The board approved a deferral for the incoming business during its May 16 meeting.
       The new tenants, a pizzeria, were seeking a deferral for the addition of curbs and a detention pond. The Planning Commission approved the request but an OK from the Board of Trustees is also required.
       Supervisor Dan O'Leary said the pizzeria's lease would only be a temporary one as the building will be torn down and rebuilt once the village district site plan is in place. He said there's no reason to fix up a place that is essentially a throw away building.
       Pete Snyder of Urban Land Consultants who is representing the pizzeria's owners, said they are proposing to pave part of the parking lot, paint the side of the building, add a brick façade and a sidewalk along the front facing Van Dyke. Instead of a detention pond, catch basins will be used instead.
       O'Leary said the township's street project next year will take care of the curbing and the pizzeria owners have agreed to make 6-foot sidewalks, which will conform with the rest of the township's sidewalk plan.
       Snyder said this deferral will only be in place until a new site plan for the village district is created.
       Until then, he said the pizzeria will be a good place to go for lunch.
       "I'm very excited, the plan looks great," Clerk Kathy Bosheers said of the pizzeria's plan.
       Trustee Jim Richardson was also pleased with the new addition into the township.
       "I think this is a great concept for Washington Township," he said.
