Romeo 2 Richmond raceIn its third year, the Romeo 2 Richmond Race reached its goal of donating $10,000 to the Macomb Food Program, which will be used to buy food for the 55 food pantries and the Richmond Food bank. The event, held Sept. 16, had more than 600 registered participants for the Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk held on the Macomb Orchard trail.A presentation was made at the Macomb Food Program Board of Directors' meeting held Thursday, Nov. 8, where John Crumm and Tracey Moro, race coordinators, presented the $10,000 check to Sue Figurski, coordinator of the Macomb Food Program.
raises $10,000 for program
Figurski said the funds have come at the perfect time and will allow the Macomb Food Program to provide 55,555 meals to Macomb County senior citizens, unemployed workers, homeless individuals, disabled veterans and mothers with young children. The food program currently has 55 food pantries located throughout Macomb County which distribute emergency food.
In the fiscal year 2012, requests for emergency food reached an all time high with just under 60,000 households requesting, which accounts for more than 187,000 individuals, an 18 percent increase over 2011. This increase shows how much the need has grown in Macomb County for food assistance.
Race coordinators, sponsors and participants were anxious to give to the Macomb Food Program.
"We are excited that we finally met our goal," Crumm said. "We are already planning for next year's race on Sept. 15, 2013, and we are hoping we will be able to do this again.
