Cory seeks to appoint
deputy supervisor

      Bruce Township Supervisor Richard Cory is looking to add a part-time position to the township's staff for assisting him with his new duties.
       Cory said he plans to appoint a deputy supervisor during a special meeting to be held today, Nov. 28, at the Township Hall.
       He said he decided on the appointment after considering the issues facing the township like the sewer debt and paving projects and observing other communities that have a deputy supervisor.
       "I'm going to be cut so many ways these first six months that we just can't let anything drop off the table because I'm new," he said.
       He said he plans to appoint Dennis Jokinen, who ran for Bruce Township clerk in August and is a Village of Romeo Planning Commission member.
       "He's going to be a wealth of information and he's going to be a great addition here at the township," Cory said.
       The position would be part time and have the powers of the supervisor in Cory's absence. The position does not, however, have voting powers on the board and cannot moderate Township Board meetings.
       Cory said if the board doesn't want to pay for the position, he is considering asking Jokinen to be a volunteer consultant.
       "My first thing is going to be to figure out how to pay him," Cory said.
       Clerk Susan Brockmann said according to the Michigan Townships Association, the supervisor makes the appointment with the consent of the board, but the full board must decide on how to finance the position.
       "I would also think that he (Cory) would provide the board with the roles and responsibilities that he wants Dennis to take over and some type of compensation if that's the case," she said. "We have a very tight budget, so we would have to figure that part out as well."
       She said knowing the responsibilities would help with the board making various appointments next month, such as appointing the building department supervisor or planning and zoning supervisor.
       "In my mind, the board needs to look at those appointments as well," she said. "I don't know if we're going to want to do some of those appointments prior to this."
       Unlike the supervisor, the clerk and treasurer are required by law to have deputy staff members due to check signing and banking responsibilities.
       Cory, along with Brockmann, Treasurer Deborah Obrecht and Trustee Mark Falker were sworn on Nov. 20. Trustee Paul Okoniewski was sworn in on Nov. 19.
