WT will get extra mile of
limestone coverage in '13
by KIMBERLY SCHEREROne extra mile of gravel road will receive an application of limestone this year in Washington Township.
Observer Special Writer
Macomb County is giving the township an extra low-cost mile. Usually they only help out with two miles.
Supervisor Dan O'Leary said during a Jan. 9 Board of Trustees meeting the township will pay 10 percent of the project cost.
"This has been a great program the last few years," he said, adding that about eight or nine miles have received the discounted limestone application from the 4-year-old program.
O'Leary is recommending 2013's limestone application to go to the remainder of 31 Mile Road on the west side of town from Campground to Dequindre roads. He also recommended a small portion of 28 Mile Road from Mt. Vernon to Gunn roads and another on Campground Road from 31.5 Mile to 32 Mile roads.
If there's any extra limestone left after the three portions have had their application, O'Leary said he would like the piece of 30 Mile Road from M53 to Powell to have fresh limestone applied. If this year goes anything like last year, there could be extra in the budget. O'Leary said after last year's two miles were applied, the county threw in an extra for free.
The work will begin sometime this summer and with regular maintenance should last three to five years.
"I think five is probably realistic," he said if regular maintenance, grading and proper drainage are there.
The board voted to approve the recommended three miles.
