Wash Twp jewelry store
hit by smash-and-grab

by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is looking for three suspects that robbed a jewelry store in under a minute.
On May 3 at 3:21 a.m., deputies responded to a burglary alarm at J & M Jewelers in Washington Township. Upon arrival, deputies found a large boulder hurled through the storefront's window and four smashed jewelry cases.
Surveillance footage revealed three men wearing masks and gloves entering through the hole created by the boulder and using hammers to smash the showcases and take the jewelry. The whole incident lasted 58 seconds.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said it has yet to be determined whether the heist was planned or a crime of opportunity.
"It's a random act until proven otherwise," he said. "It was a smash-and-grab operation."
Lt. John Michalke said the surveillance video didn't reveal how the suspects left the area, and that they escaped prior to the arrival of deputies.
A list of stolen items is being put together by the sheriff's office, and no dollar amount has been given to the value of the items.
Anyone with information regarding the incident can call the sheriff's office at (586) 307-9358.
