by KIMBERLY SCHERERWashington Township Fire Department promoted one of its own to assistant fire chief during the Feb. 5 Board of Trustees meeting.
Observer Special Writer
Fire Chief Brian Tyrell pinned longtime Washington firefighter Robert Schmeizer into his new role.
Tyrell said Schmeizer started with the department in 1992 and was promoted to captain in 2009. He was the first EMS instructor coordinator, created a vehicle maintenance program and served on several new apparatus committees. Recently, he was certified as a fire inspector and completed Michigan State Police Fire Investigation One.
"He's always been, and continues to be, a solid leader," Tyrell said, adding that Schmeizer has been a mentor to all on the department.
"You will continue to see us pull from the inside, because we have great people on the inside," Supervisor Dan O'Leary said of the promotion.
