County OKs no smoking policyA collaborative effort between the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, Office of the County Executive and the Facilities and Operations Department has led to the creation of a more comprehensive and enforceable no smoking policy.
Providing protection against second-hand smoke is just as important as not smoking in the first place. In effort to better protect employees and residents, the amended policy provides opportunities for designated smoking areas to exist. These areas are to be located a sufficient distance away from walkways, windows, air intakes and other building openings in county facilities to best avoid smoke wafting inside or at high traffic areas.
Within these designated areas, the policy states these places should provide enough room to accommodate several people, all of whom will be responsible for properly disposing their cigarette waste.
Aside from what will be the designated smoking areas, smoking on county property is prohibited.
"It is important the county has a no smoking policy that is enforceable, which is why the Board, the Office of the County Executive and Facilities and Operations diligently worked to implement this policy," said Board Chairman Dave Flynn. "By providing designated smoking areas enforceability will increase, as will self-compliance."
This amended policy was adopted on July 31 at the full board meeting.
