Romeo win over Ike, 72-56 by RICK DESOTELL
Opposing teams are doing all they can to stop Romeo senior Blake Cushingberry from scoring, but it doesn't matter. When you're one of the best basketball players in the state you still find a way to get your points. Observer Sports Writer Friday at Utica Eisenhower Cushingberry led all scorers with 25 points, hauled down 12 rebounds and dished off six assists to lead the Bulldogs to a 72-56 MAC Red win over the Eagles. Eisenhower, which entered the game undefeated in league play, is always tough at home and actually led 35-34 at the half, forcing Romeo to make some defensive adjustments in the locker room. "We were very concerned about the easy looks Ike was getting in the first half,'' Romeo Coach Dale Teller said. "Assistant Coach Clyde Cushingberry came up with a great adjustment at half on our defensive end that frustrated Ike a little and we got some turnovers that lead to baskets.'' Romeo played much better defense in the second half, limiting Ike's shots and holding them to just 21 second half points while the Bulldogs scored 38. Brent Newsom and Joe Wilson took up the scoring slack left by injured starting center Nate Saliga. Newsom finished with 14 points and had 10 rebounds and Wilson added 10 points and six rebounds. Point guard Nick Kosovich finished with nine points, all in the second half; Kyle Maxwell and Derrick Gaffke had four points each and Rick Roth chipped in with three points for the Bulldogs (3-1, 5-1). "We don't really need Nick (Kosovich) to score a lot of points to help our team,'' said Teller. "All he needs to do is direct the floor and he is very capable at doing that. Derrick Gaffke along with junior Kyle Maxwell did a great job filling in for Nate (Saliga) and I think that Rick Roth, Ryan Thomas and Brandon Hoenicke have done a great job off the bench. There's still a lot of season left and we think we will continue to get better as the players improve through repetition.'' Eisenhower (2-1 MAC Red, 4-4 overall) was led by Justin Brege with 21 points followed by Ryan Tomayko with 11. Romeo 55, Eisenhower 49: (junior varsity) Friday night at Eisenhower, Jason Schirmer scored 16 points including three 3-pointers and had five rebounds and four assists to lead the junior varsity over the Eagles. With the win the junior varsity team remains unbeaten at 6-0 and improves to a MAC Red division leading 4-0. "That was a pretty solid win considering that we are coming off of break without playing for a couple of weeks,'' junior varsity Coach Clyde Cushingberry said. "Things are going pretty good so far. We're healthy and happy and playing unselfishly right now, we just have to keep it up.'' Spencer Szwejk had 15 points for Romeo; Austin Coniglio and Ryan Grzegorzewski had eight points each and Ben Brown and Logan Fracalossi had four points a piece. |
