School raises over $2,000
for leukemia research

by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer
      It's for a good cause.
For the first year, Romeo Middle School (RMS) banded together to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by participating in the Olive Garden's 14th Annual Pennies for Pasta fundraiser, with an added bonus of earning school supplies and a tasty lunch.
As a reward for hard work, Olive Garden restaurant workers will come to the school and provide a "hospitaliano" lunch for the class that raises the most money.
The school collected a total of $2,577, exceeding its goal of $2,000.
The three-week fundraiser was inspired by a former RMS student, Alex Brewer. He was diagnosed with leukemia at three years of age, a battle he and his family endured for years. Nowadays, he is a healthy ninth-grader at Romeo High School, but his sister, seventh-grader Brooke, said it was hard for her and her family to fight the disease.
She and her family have been in charge of collecting the mounds of change and taking it to be counted.
"So now, hopefully, nobody else will have to go through what we went through, so that is why we're doing it," she said.
She chose to chair the fundraiser in honor of her brother, and has been touched by how much teachers, parents and fellow students have given. Her family also holds a golf outing to raise money to fight leukemia.
"It means so much to me and my family that people want to raise money for a cure," she said.
And raise they did. Since the school collected over $2,000, they earned the right to go on-line and pick out equipment to be provided to the school by Electronic Barn. Computers, electronics and sports equipment are among the selection.
The society raises funds to help cure leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin's disease as well as improving the life of patients and their families. Over a course of three weeks, students and their parents were encouraged to collect as much coinage as possible and donate during the third hour class period.
Different days throughout the fundraiser helped generate additional funds, such as donating a dollar to wear a hat in school.
RMS secretary Kim Smith was a firsthand witness of the competition within the classes to try and raise the most money for the organization. Small boxes full of money were on a cart by her desk on Friday, ready to be counted.
"It's kind of funny, because they won't say anything, but the teachers come in and bring a whole bunch of change to dump in their coffer," she said. "We see it as an opportunity to demonstrate the passion we have for supporting our students and community."
