a win against Warren Mott by RICK DESOTELL
Off to a great start.Observer Sports Writer Running back Ben Brown rushed for a 153 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Romeo High varsity football team to an impressive 47-15, MAC crossover win over Warren Mott Thursday night in Warren. Mott (0-1) looked good early, taking the opening kickoff on a nice drive that was capped off by a 6-yard run by junior quarterback Ben Fillion for a 7-0 lead. But that was it. From there, it was all Romeo. The Bulldogs quickly answered to cut the lead to 7-3 on their first drive of the game when kicker Robbie Flinn connected on a 32-yard field goal that was set up by a well-executed screen pass to receiver Justin Medley that went for 48 yards. A few minutes later, Brown gave Romeo the lead for good when he capped a short drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 10-7, heading into the second quarter. Brown's touchdown run was set up by Bobby Gintner's 35 yard punt return. Gintner finished with over 100 yards of kick and punt returns on the night. Flinn gave Romeo a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal followed by Brown's second 3-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 13 point lead at 20-7. Romeo quarterback Rick Roth (8 of 14 for 125 yards and 1 TD) finished the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Brynaert to make it 26-7 Bulldogs at the half. After a shaky start, the Bulldogs defense found its rhythm and not only stopped the Marauders' vaunted spread offense the rest of the way, they forced several turnovers and had some big returns to set up the offense again and again. Josh Burkhard and Erin Laurain each recovered Mott fumbles that set up scores and Jimmy Kern picked off a pass and returned it nearly 70 yards to set up another. "We needed to be tested and we were,'' Romeo co-Coach Curt Rienas said. "That opening drive woke us up in a hurry, but from there I thought we played pretty well. Mott is a very dangerous team, they're going to score a lot of points this year.'' The Romeo offense, spearheaded by coordinator and co-Coach Jason Couch, wasted little time in taking advantage of the field position the defense and special teams were giving them and raked up more than 400 yards in total offense on the night<279 of it on the ground. Roth scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter; backup quarterback Jake Alcini added a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth and Tyler Fitzgerald rounded out the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run. Defensive lineman Nick Duronio led the Bulldogs with six tackles, Laurain was next with five. Romeo (1-0) travels to Utica Ford on Friday to play the Falcons who are also 1-0 after nipping L'Anse Creuse North, 27-21. |
