Dubiel: Girls' tennis team
ready to defend MAC White

The Romeo High School girls' tennis team, two-time defending MAC White champs, are ready to defend and hold onto its title.
Coach Mark Dubiel said he believes this team has the greatest depth of any Bulldog team he has coached in the past 19 years.
Playing on this year's team are seniors Nikki Abate, Sarah Awe, Allison Kron, Kayla Mill, Katherine Stephens, Amanda Szewczyk, Mrythe Van Rijssel and Alyssa Vinckier; juniors Kayla DeCook, Lea Holloway and Kathleen Refior; sophomore Cortney Kovacic and freshmen Katie Betzing and Maddy Petz.
Dubiel said that it is incredible to have two freshmen on this year's team who will contribute significantly. On the other end of the spectrum are Awe and Vinckier. They are both four-year varsity players and could become two of the winningest players in school history, he said.
This year's team captains are Awe, Kron and Vinckier.
Dubiel said the singles lineup is set: Awe is playing 1-singles, Vinckier 2-singles, Petz 3-singles and Holloway 4-singles. Because of the depth and trying to match players, the doubles lineup is not yet set. The pairings and positions have switched for each match. Abate and Stephens have played at both 1-doubles and 2-doubles. Refior and Van Rijssel have played at 1 and 2-doubles. DeCook and Betzing have partnered up at 3 and 4-doubles. Kron has played at 1-doubles and at 3-doubles. Kovacic has played 3 and 4 doubles. Mill and Szewczyk have played at 4 or 5-doubles.
"It is critical that I have these pairings and positions set in the next week for seeding purposes at Regionals," said Dubiel.
Currently, the Bulldogs are 3-1. On March 28, they lost 7-1 to Port Huron Northern (ranked two in the state in pre-season polls). The lone victors in that match were DeCook and Betzing at 4-doubles.
Since the spring break, they have beaten Chippewa Valley (8-0), Eisenhower (6-2) and L'Anse Creuse North (7-1).
