The Powell Middle School football teams opened the season with games against L'Anse Creuse North on Tuesday, Sept. 25.The seventh grade team saw a 36-18 win. Malik Jones had a huge game, scoring four touchdowns for Romeo. Quarterback Luke Durham had a 20-yard throw in the second quarter to Cole Harko, who ran another 30 yards for the touchdown. The play was capped off by a two-point conversion run by Dominic Niprelivic. Tyler Hugo played great defense. He saved a touchdown for the team as he batted down a ball that was thrown to the end zone. Harko and Durham played big in the defensive game plan, making many big tackles to help in the Bulldog victory. The eighth grade team saw a hard-fought 12-6 loss to L'Anse Creuse North. Frankie Ruffino rumbled 80 yards on a kickoff to give Powell its only score of the day. Quarterback Gavin Ganfield took charge of the offense and led several running and passing attacks up and down the field, however the team could not score. Defensively, John Seger, Hunter Eggerding and Trevor Mulrenin caused chaos on the LCN ball carries, causing fumbles, while Matt Amato, Daniel Jones and Griffin Rolfs each recovered fumbles. Ganfield played a strong defensive game from his cornerback position, making many solo tackles. |
