Younger wrestlers will
bring talent to squad

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
With just two juniors and eight seniors on the squad, the Romeo High wrestling team will be counting heavily on its sophomore and freshman classes this season, but it's OK; there's a lot of talent down there.
"Our numbers are up from the past couple of years, which is very encouraging,'' said Romeo Coach Jim Cali, whose record is an impressive 458-183-4 with 11 Conference Championships, 13 District Championships, 6 Regional Championships, and 4 Macomb County Championships over the past 20 years. "Since we reintroduced middle school wrestling last year, we should continue to see more freshmen sticking with the sport. The sophomore class returns with plenty of depth and experience. Many of them had varsity experience last year and our freshman class has pretty good numbers and a lot of potential."
The Bulldogs will be led this year by returning state qualifiers, seniors Evan Richardson (135 pounds) and Alex Christofis (152).
Back also is second team All-Macomb County selection senior Larry Rekar (189).
The rest of the Bulldog squad is: Cody Martin, freshman, 103; Brian Keelin, sophomore, 112; Jordan Forest, sophomore, 119; Mike Hartman, freshman, 119; Brett Peters, sophomore, 119; Max Lucci, freshman, 125; Tyler Perry, freshman, 125; Zach Peterson, sophomore, 125; Chris Kanczuga, sophomore, 125; Sam Peruski, sophomore, 125; Sam Cali, senior, 130; Gareth Allen, sophomore, 130; Shawn Malkowicz, freshman, 135; Anthony Quas, freshman, 135; Quinn Walker, freshman, 135; Dylan Alcini, sophomore, 140; Naseef Pawlitz, freshman, 145; Evyn Bryant, sophomore, 145; Tyler Grund, freshman, 152; Chris Maskill, freshman,152; Humberto Flores, freshman, 152; Tanner Dondero, freshman, 152; Seth Decent, sophomore, 152; Nathan Conner, sophomore, 171; Will Jackson, senior, 171; Ryan Naughton, junior, 215; Chris Zanke, freshman, 215; Max Bradley, senior, 285; Andre Martinez, senior, 285; Austin Espinoza, freshman, 285; Reece Eller, sophomore 285; and Diego Rodriguez, junior, 285.
The Bulldogs compete in the MAC Red division along with Anchor Bay, Chippewa Valley, Dakota, L'Anse Creuse and Warren Woods Tower.
"We are very fortunate to have Mike Stabley and Ryan Tiseo back coaching again,'' said Cali. "Coach Stabley and Coach Tiseo are great role models who know our system very well and work great with the boys. We are all very excited for the start of the matches and tournaments. We feel we have talent throughout our line-up and with some hard work, we should have a really fun and rewarding season."
Romeo's first match is 5:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Rochester Adams and its first tournament is 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Westland John Glenn. See www.romeowrestling.com for schedule and updates.
