Romeo wrestlers 1-1 in
MAC and 15-11 overall

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
You have to love the grit and determination the Romeo High wrestling team is showing this season, as they continue to find ways to win despite illness, injury and lack of depth.
The Bulldogs, now 15-11 overall and 1-1 in the MAC Red, wrestled last Thursday and Saturday against some of the state's best teams and walked away with their heads held high.
On Thursday, the wrestlers took on seventh ranked Dakota and lost 43-21 giving up two voids but then bounced back to beat a very good Chippewa Valley team, 37-23.
"What could have been a real tough day after a couple guys didn't make weight and missing guys because of sickness turned out pretty well,'' said Romeo Coach Jim Cali. "Chippewa Valley and Dakota are two real good teams. We pulled out a tough one against Chippewa and had a great shot at Dakota even under the circumstances. It is a real credit to the boys who went out there. We lost three matches in a row by a total of five points which could have really turned the dual meet around. Regardless of the outcome we wrestled pretty well."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs were up in Bay City Western for the Michigan Duals and even though they were shorthanded again, came through with some big wins.
Romeo beat Yale, 57-18, and Waterford Kettering, 43-29, and lost to host Bay City Western, 34-28, in pool play and then lost to Carleton Airport, 48-34, Ortonville Brandon, 35-31, after they crossed over.
Evan Richardson (135-pounds) and Alex Christofis (160/171) went undefeated on the day at 5-0, which is pretty impressive considering the competition.
Oxford won the tournament; Allegan was second followed by Anchor Bay in third, Bay City Western was fourth, Westland John Glenn was in fifth, Carleton Airport was sixth, Ortonville Brandon was seventh, Romeo was eighth, Kettering was ninth and Yale finished in 10th.
"We were really excited about going into the Michigan Duals with a full lineup and everyone on weight but on the morning of the tournament we found out one of our leaders, Will Jackson, was sick as a dog and couldn't wrestle,'' said Cali, whose team will wrestle L'Anse Creuse and Warren Woods Tower at L'Anse Creuse on Thursday, then on Saturday will travel to Holly for the Holly Duals. "We still did well avenging a 13 point loss to Yale with a 39 point victory. The next match against undefeated Bay City Western was one of the most fun dual meets of the season. There were some great individual matches and the team score went down to the wire. We bounced back against Waterford Kettering to finish second in our pool. In the pool crossover matches we had to compete without our 215 and 285 pound wrestlers. The boys hung really tough against Carleton and Brandon, but, it is tough to beat good teams with three voids. We like to have an overnight stay against top competition to get ready for the state tournament. Overall it was a great weekend."
