Red takes White in
annual Alumni Game
by ARLENE HOPPERIt was a night of fun and excitement for 40 former Romeo High School players, their family and friends. They came to battle at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28, at Suburban Ice Macomb.
This was the Second Annual Romeo Ice Hockey Alumni Game organized by Coach John Minjoe of the Romeo High School varsity ice hockey team.
"It is a true love of mine to put this game on and honor our players," he said.
Among the skaters were David Dettmer, Jonathan Minjoe and Scott Hooper, who were three players from Romeo's first ice hockey club team in 2001-2002. The game also included players from the 2003 to 2012 teams.
In Romeo's honor, the older "alumni" made up the Red Team and the younger "alumni" made up the White Team.
The first period started off with lots of action and high intensity play. Only a few minutes into the game, Brad Rice scored for the Red Team, assisted by Brandon Bidus. The period ended with the Red Team leading 1-0.
The second period was a scoring frenzy for the Red Team. Steve Hooper scored two goals, Brandon Bidus and David Dettmer each scored a goal. Assisting on those goals were Jonathan Minjoe, Billy Turner, Alex Hawkins, Paul Capizzo, Brad Rice and Ryan Hemmingway. Scott Hooper had a strong first half of the game in net, not allowing any goals before turning over the goaltending duties to Dan Speck.
The White Team got on the board late in the period by scoring a power play goal from Josh Seguin, assisted by Alex Harms. The Red Team dominated the second period with the score of 5-1.
During the third period, the White Team did not back down. A quick goal was scored by Matt Jacob, assisted by Anthony Grifka and Brad Gardner. The Red Team answered back with a goal midway through the period scored by Jordan Sirhan, assisted by Jonathan Minjoe and Rob Hutchinson. The final score of the game: Red Team, 6 — White Team, 2.
After the game, everyone was invited to Art & Jakes in Washington Township for a hockey reception. Art & Jakes was packed to capacity.
Sponsors of the event were Art & Jakes, PLB Lending and Dr. Mark Cammarata DDS. Taking charge of organizing the event were Coach Minjoe and his staff, especially Patti Cammarata who played a big role.
