Utica Eisenhower's Dan Chmielewski hit a leaning 12-foot jumper with three seconds left to lead the Eagles to a 49-47 MAC Red Division win over the Romeo High School varsity basketball team last Wednesday night at Romeo. Observer Sports Writer It was a tight game from the start with Ike grabbing an 11-8 lead after one quarter. Romeo took the lead 14-11 on a pair of 3-pointers by Antonio Compo and Ryan Romer midway through the second quarter, but it was the Eagles who led 26-24 at the half. The third quarter was a seesaw affair with Adam Davis hitting a late 3-pointer to close the gap to one, 37-36, heading into the fourth. The fourth quarter was an exciting 12 minutes with both teams hitting big shots throughout. Drew Cushingberry tied the game at 47-47 with a 3-pointer triple before Chmielewski's final shot a minute later. "Once again we were not consistent with the ball and as a result our turnovers created way too much stress on the defense,'' said Romeo Coach Dale Teller. "No team can defend turnovers. However, we are close and if we can be more efficient at the offensive end, we'll be a good team. Still, a lot of basketball left to play." Davis led Romeo with 15 points, Cushingberry added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Compo finished with nine points on three 3-pointers. Romer finished with six points, George Wilson had four and Paul LaBaere two for the Bulldogs, which fell to 5-5 overall, 1-3 in the MAC Red division. Warren Cousino, 63; Romeo, 55: Friday, Jan. 25, at Warren, Cushingberry led Romeo in a losing effort with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Compo finished in double figures with 13 points as did Davis with 12. Blake Williams was next with six points and seven rebounds, Romer added three points and Jon Towne one for the Bulldogs who are 5-6 overall. "This was a very good game for Blake Williams,'' said Teller. "We were down 23-5 with three minutes to go in the first quarter because we got caught again not being ready focus wise. We woke up and really started to win the little battles and rebound well and got ourselves back in it, but a couple turnovers and lack of execution with the ball hurt. We felt good with the effort and how we did not quit." |
