continues EMMA traditions by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer Though the name has changed, the Greater Romeo-Washington Chamber of Commerce's annual December event still aims to honor extraordinary businesses. The Winter Solstice . . . \A Community Celebration, formerly known as the EMMA Awards, will be held Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Romeo Masonic Temple on N. Main Street. Doors open at 5 p.m. The EMMA (Extraordinary Member Merit & Achievement) awards celebrated and honored both businesses and residents in the Romeo area. Kelley Stephens, chamber executive director, said after 10 years of EMMA ceremonies it was time to freshen it up. "This event is an opportunity for us to recognize our special businesses and people in our community," she said. In previous years, multiple awards were given to recipients chosen by the chamber membership. This year the awards have been pared down to recognize the following: Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Public Service, Excellence in Teaching/Mentoring and Lifetime Achievement. Also returning this year is the Chelsea Elizabeth Pascoe Memorial Youth Award, which recognizes a student that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and volunteerism in their community. In addition to attending the awards ceremony, ticket holders will be treated to a strolling buffet from Pamela's Catering, beer and wine and a drink ticket to Younger's Irish Tavern. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The event is also the annual meeting of the chamber, where five members will be selected to serve on the Board of Directors. Tickets are $35 each, and can be purchased through the chamber by sending a check to the Greater Romeo-Washington Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 175 Romeo, MI, 48065. Buyers have until Dec. 1 to purchase tickets. Call (586) 752-4436 for more information. |
