RHS students to put on
murder mystery dinner

Romeo High School students are presenting a night of dating, dining and death.
The Romeo Theatre Company is teaming up with the culinary arts program to present an original murder mystery dinner, "Dying for a Date!"
The dinner and production will be presented at 7 p.m. on May 3 and 4 at the Romeo Engineering and Technology Center on Jewell Road.
The play, a comedy and mystery, was created by the theater company over the past six months. It centers around the unveiling of a new dating book, "Dying for a Date!" penned by the characters Ruby Sparkles and Hugh G. Diamonds.
Kendra Walls, theater teacher, said characters such as the exes of the authors, actors from a local community theater, a disgruntled publisher and a nosy officer are introduced before the unveiling takes a deadly turn.
"We spent six months on and off writing the show," Walls said. "It's going to be a fun, neat way of showcasing the acting skills of my seniors."
She said audience members will be encouraged to add to the laughs by participating during the evening, such as volunteering to read cheesy pick-up lines.
"We've been researching ideas for dating dos and dont's and ways to include the audience," Walls said.
Clues will be sprinkled throughout the performance that hint to who committed the murder, but the audience can expect some twists along the way.
Though the murder may be fake, the night's meal will certainly be real. Chef Colleen Spiers, culinary arts instructor, said every night is expected to fill up, which only adds to the learning experience for her students.
"That's part of the fun of it, there are more people than we expect," Spiers said. "It's trying to solve this issue of `we've got people out there expecting food.'"
She said the additional fun is having the culinary arts students interact with the theater students, as they can watch each other in action.
"They get to see what it's like putting on dinner for so many people," Spiers said. "It's theatrics within theatrics all the way around."
The menu has yet to be chosen, but Spiers said the theme of the production will be incorporated into the dishes.
Space is limited to 125 seats per performance. Tickets are $20 each and must be bought before May 1 to accommodate culinary needs.
