Bruce Township to host
first tree lighting event

      Celebrate the upcoming holidays while giving back to the community with Bruce Township's first-ever tree-lighting ceremony.
       The "Thanks for Giving Event" will be held at the Bruce Township Hall on East Gates Street from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16.
       Bruce Township Clerk Susan Brockmann said about three weeks ago the township received word from the local Gass Farms that they were removing a 21-foot tree and wondered if the township wanted it.
       "They asked if we were interested, and of course we said yes," Brockmann said.
       As a result, the township worked with Mt. Vernon Tree to move the tree from the farm and to the Township Park. The company donated the service at no cost.
       Following in that spirit of giving, the township and Parks and Recreation are asking attendees bring monetary donations or gifts of non-perishable food items or toiletries for Samaritan House.
       "Were hoping to make it into an annual Thanksgiving event," Brockmann said. "There is no charge, but we would appreciate a donation to Samaritan House."
       Guests can munch on hot chocolate and cookies while at the event. Sneak peeks of the new Fire Hall will be available as well as Thanksgiving crafts and BINGO for kids.
       Attendees can also enjoy a bonfire as well as celebrating the lighting of the new tree in the Township Park.
       Clara Russell, Parks and Recreation director, said she is glad that Bruce Township now has its own tree lighting ceremony, as Washington and Romeo hold similar events toward the end of the year.
       "During the holiday season people always think about giving, and Samaritan House needs it year round, so we thought we could do a collection," Russell said. "Hopefully this grows and this'll be a big drive for them."
