Join 'Trashy Treasures'
contest at Shelby Art Fair
The Shelby Solid Waste & Recycling Committee and the Shelby Township Beautification Committee are working together to host a friendly competition aimed at promoting recycling and "green" living.
They invite residents from Shelby Township and neighboring communities to get creative by combining discarded materials to produce a "Trashy Treasures" masterpiece to exhibit and compete for cash prizes at the Shelby Township Art Fair on Aug. 10 and 11.
Winning works will also be displayed in the lobby of the Shelby Township Municipal Building through the end of August.
The categories are divided by age: Youth<12 & under; Teen<12 to 17 and Adult<18 & up.
Entries must be made entirely of recycled items and for planning purposes a photo of each entry must be submitted to the Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department by Aug. 1. Winners will be chosen by a tally of ballots completed by fairgoers at the Shelby Township Art Fair Aug. 10 and 11 with prizes awarded that Sunday afternoon.
The two committees will be working in cooperation to man a tent on the Municipal Grounds at the fair where they will accept completed ballots and talk to visitors about recycling and what their committees do in the community.
The contest is just one of the events going on at the Shelby Township Art Fair. In addition to works by over 70 artists and artisans and a number of vendors in the Michigan Made Products Area, fairgoers will enjoy live music at the bandshell (sponsored by Genisys Credit Union), performances by the Detroit Flyhouse Circus, Sand Sculpting by Big Wave Dave (sponsored by Christian Financial Credit Union), Chainsaw Carving by Mike Weiss, a Kid's Craft and Activity Area, Play 1st Mobile Gaming Unit, Classic Art Reproductions from the DIA Inside|Out Project , and more.
