Deadline for baby, pet
photo contest Thursday
by JUDITH KIMPAN
Observer Special Writer
It's time for the little ones to smile for the camera. Say "cheese" and see if your pet reacts for a photogenic portrait.
Entries for the 2013 Peach Festival Baby and Pet Photo Contest, sponsored by the Romeo Area Kiwanis Club, are now due.
Pat Duch, contest chairperson, will accept last minute entries if they are delivered Thursday by noon to Pat's II Jewelers at 64752 Van Dyke Rd. in Washington Twp.
"We usually get 100-150 entries," Duch said.
There is a $5 entry fee for each photo. Children 5 years old and under are eligible and pets of all ages. Submit photos no larger than 5x7 inches. If you would like your photo returned please bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Voting takes place Friday, Aug. 30 through Sept 1. No voting will be allowed on Monday, Sept. 2, but there will be viewing.
Photos will be displayed at 131 S, Main St. during the Peach Festival.
A bank for each entry is provided. People vote by depositing money in the bank for the photo they like best. Winners are determined by who has the most money. The winning photos are published in The Romeo Observer.
"It's always a surprise," Duch said.
Romeo Area Kiwanis Club members try to keep the proceeds from this fundraiser for children's activities in the local area as much as possible.
Activities the Romeo Area Kiwanis support include: a scholarship for a Romeo High School student, a trip to Westview Orchards, a Christmas party and donations of gift baskets of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
First prize for the Baby Contest is a $200 gift to a 529 college savings account donated by the First Merit Bank of Romeo. U.S. Savings Bonds, Pets Supplies Plus donations and other prizes will be awarded.
"Every year I say this is the last one, but I keep doing it. It is a lot of fun. The time goes by fast as the people `ohh and ahhh' over the pictures," Duch said.
A few days after the contest the results are tallied and a bank will check and confirm the numbers. Every winner is called and results will be posted at Pat's II Jewelers.
Each baby photo entered will receive a free birthstone from Pat's II Jewelers.
"Parents and relatives love having their children's photos up," Duch said.
