32 Mile Road to be
widened within village

by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer
A main traffic artery for the northern communities will get a makeover during the summer.
The Road Commission of Macomb County has authorized a nearly $75,000 project to widen a portion of 32 Mile Road in the Village of Romeo during the summer.
A resurfacing project of three miles of road in Armada and Richmond townships is also under way.
The Romeo project calls for the widening of 32 Mile Road from two lanes to three at the portion near Clinton Street, east of the Macomb Orchard Trail.
"It congests traffic there so it's a good idea, it should be three lanes all the way through," said Bob Hoepfner, county highway engineer for the Road Commission.
The estimated total cost comes in at $73,879, with the commission and the village splitting the bill at roughly $36,940 each.
Funds provided by the village must be fully paid before the bid is awarded for the project. Bids will go out July 7.
Hoepfner said the project, once it begins, will only take a few weeks to complete. Nothing will permanently close during the construction, with delays only occurring when one lane is open for use.
"It's not a complex project," he said.
Additional improvements to 32 Mile Road in Armada and Richmond townships began June 16. The repaving project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The commission is resurfacing portions of 32 Mile Road between Omo and Place roads and Hicks and Hartway. It is also resurfacing North Avenue from 32 Mile Road to 33 Mile Road.
The Federal Highway Administration will pay 80 percent of the estimated $295,000 cost, with the Road Commission paying the other 20 percent. Hoepfner said the project is expected to increase the road's life span by five to seven years.
