DELAYED DUMPSTERS. Seen above is the completed dumpster corral located in the southwest quadrant of downtown Romeo, built from plans created by the Romeo Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The DDA's plans to have another built in a different quadrant will likely have to wait until the springtime.

hits snag in planning

Getting all of Romeo's dumpsters in a row may have to wait until warmer climates roll in.
The Romeo Downtown Development Authority (DDA)'s Central Business District Trash Removal/Recycle Dumpster Committee has reported that the hope of condensing dumpster locations in the distrct before the winter season will likely not occur.
At the DDA's Oct. 21 meeting, the board was asked by the subcommittee to examine three possible locations for a corral. The committee consists of DDA Vice-chairperson Christine Malzahn, Director Jason Arnott, village officials and business owners in the respective quadrant.
Since the meeting, though, a problem popped up with this particular quadrant. The area, which contains businesses such as Buscemi's Uptown Liquor and the BP gas station, has little public property to build a corral on.
"Based on their initial meeting, the committee wasn't able to come up with a solution," said DDA Chairperson Bob Hart. "If it comes down to putting it on private property, we might need to work out some type of lease agreement."
The other problem the quadrant presents is the building located near Buscemi's. The committee must consider if any future businesses that occupy the vacancies will want to utilize the corral as well.
"We're not sure what we can do this year, but after looking at this, it doesn't show to be a simple, ready-to-go solution," he said.
DDA Vice-chairperson Christine Malzahn said that the DDA is looking at the southeast and northeast quadrants for the next location.
"It's possible to talk about it, whole project hasn't been tabled," she said. "We're still open to suggestions from residents and property owners, and hope someone can step up wih a solution."
Earlier this year, the DDA spent $70,000 to build a dumpster corral in the southwest quadrant of the village. The corral holds dumpsters and a grease trap for businesses like Younger's Irish Tavern and Thee Office Pub and Cookery.
In conjunction with the dumpster project, the DDA also looked at renovating the alleyway behind the southwest businesses to make it more pedestrian-friendly. Concerns from Thee Office Pub's owners, though, put a hold on the project until an agreement can be reached.
