WT to expend money for
The Washington Township Board of Trustees, at its March 3 meeting, agreed to contribute money toward a county-sponsored household hazardous waste event.hazardous waste event Supervisor Dan O'Leary said the county puts together hazardous waste pickup events to collect such items as old paint and oil. Though the event used to be free, the county is now asking that the township contribute $2,000 to help pay for the event. Washington was asked for the same contribution last year. "It bugs me to have to continue to subsidize things for the county because of their financial problems," said O'Leary, adding that they need to help hold the event because of the residents. "More people are utilizing the collection and we are just asking for some assistance from the township to share some of the cost of the collection as they did in 2009," said Stephen Lichota, associated director of evnvironmental health for Macomb County Health Department. Macomb County Sheriff Department officers will also be on hand to collect unused prescription drugs. Last year, 586 people showed up with their hazardous waste. Of that amount, O'Leary said 240 were from the immediate area. The board voted unanimously to approve the $2,000 contribution, which will come from the township's General Fund. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21 at the township hall. |
