Suspect arrested after
robbing bank twice

by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer
A Royal Oak man has been arrested after robbing a Washington Township bank for the second time.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office arrested Gary Wagner, 57, on June 22 in relation to robbing the Best Bank located at the Kroger at 30 Mile Road and Van Dyke.
Wagner was arrested several hours after the incident in Mount Clemens and was arraigned with a $250,000 bond in 42-1 District Court in Romeo.
County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham confirmed that Wagner was the same suspect who robbed the bank on May 29. He used the same technique as well, giving a handwritten note to the teller demanding money and implying he was armed.
"You don't find that too common in the bank robbery business," Wickersham said of robbing the same location.
The sheriff's office was able to identify Wagner afters a bank customer attempted to stop him and wrote down his license plate as he fled.
Wickersham said he doesn't encourage citizens to take on potentially dangerous suspects, but added that thanks to the customer's involvement the sheriff's office had help in identifying the suspect.
The amount of money Wagner took was not released, but Wickersham reported it was "not a large sum."
The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information can call (586) 469-5151.
