Residents encouraged to
lock doors after break-ins

      Washington Township officials are cautioning homeowners to lock their doors and help to cut a string of break-ins off at the pass.
       A number of break-ins in the past few weeks are plaguing residents in the 28 Mile, 30 Mile and 31 Mile road areas on the western side of Washington Township, causing officials to recommend vigilance on the part of residents.
       Supervisor Dan O'Leary is asking residents to close and lock their doors and be on the lookout for people they don't recognize in their area to deter any additional incidents.
       "It's a safe area, but crime happens everywhere," he said.
       He said there was even one case where the perpetrator entered a person's home and stole some items while the owner was at another part of the property.
       "It's just an unusual time," he said. "We've just got to recognize the reality about the world."
       The township has seen its fair share of home invasions. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office arrested two local men on May 2 on home invasion charges after observing them break into a home in Memphis.
       The sheriff's office reported the men were most likely stealing items to support their drug habits. It's uncertain if they were responsible for a rash of eight home invasions that took place from April 9 to April 28.
       "The sheriff is still working on the case," O'Leary said.
       In addition to burglars, O'Leary said residents should be on guard for vendors knocking on doors and selling wares or asking to take surveys. He said people are only allowed to do this if they register with the clerk's office.
       "If you ask them for their license and they don't have it, call the township office or sheriff and tell them you're concerned about people walking in your neighborhood," he said.
