Local teen escapes rollover
with few injuries

by CHRIS GRAY
Observer Staff Writer
A local Romeo teenager endured a rollover accident that officers are claiming was the result of texting while driving.
At 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 7, the Romeo Police Department responded to a one-vehicle accident that occurred on W. St. Clair Street just west of Morton Street.
The driver had careened across the road while traveling eastbound and struck the curb on the north side of St. Clair, causing the vehicle to roll over and crash through the fence of the Romeo Cemetery.
The Bruce-Romeo Fire Department responded to the scene, transporting the driver to the hospital with non-serious injuries.
Police Chief Greg Paduch said the driver's phone was checked by personnel at the scene, revealing a text message right before the 911 call came in.
"We don't know that she actually was texting at the time," he said.
Paduch said the driver was issued a careless driver citation, which doesn't address the texting but is a stiffer offense than being cited for texting while driving.
Paduch said no further investigation is being held in regards to the incident.
Fire Chief Floyd Shotwell said he had his suspicions as to what caused the accident, but declined to comment.
Paduch said the driver, who's name was not released, is claiming she was not texting while driving. Attempts to contact the driver were not returned by Observer print deadline.
