for new fire station 3 by CHRIS GRAY
Bruce officials have decided to pay for a new fire hall upfront instead of seeking financing.Observer Staff Writer The Bruce Township Board of Trustees agreed on Sept. 19 to pay $200,000 of the cost for building the new Fire Station 3 on East Gates Street. After investigating the available options, Clerk Susan Brockmann said the recommendation was to forego financing the fire hall and come up with the $200,000. "We have enough reserves in fund balance to pay for that without financing," she said outside of the meeting. Brockmann said it would become cumbersome for putting together proposal requests for that amount of money while involving the numerous contractors. "It would've held up the payments for the contractors for several weeks," she said. "Also the legal fees involved would've put us up at a much higher interest rate." In addition, she said should the department purchase new vehicles it would be easier to finance those instead of the new building. A total accumulated cost of the building construction wasn't available as of Sept. 21, but Brockmann estimates the station will run just over $400,000. She said it is scheduled for a mid-November completion date. The new building will sit near Fire Station 1 on East Gates Street. The 3,500 square foot structure will hold two ambulances, one fire engine and 1,200 square feet set aside for living quarters. Staff at the fire hall on Rawles Street in Romeo will move to the new station once it's completed. Fire Chief Floyd Shotwell has said he has plans for the building that would generate revenue, and would reveal them after the new station's completion. |
