WT moves ahead
on future TIP projects

Observer Special Writer
Macomb County is already accepting projects to review for the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for 2015 and Washington Township didn't miss a beat to hand its in.
The paving of Jewell Road was the first project Washington was approved for through TIP. The township will pay less than 25 percent of the total project cost.
Next up is Van Dyke from 26 Mile Road to West Road. Included in that project is repaving, curbs, sidewalks and a turn lane. The plan for 2014 is to pave the stretch of Mound Road between 28 Mile and 29 Mile roads.
The plan submitted for 2015 will finish where next year's project leaves off: Van Dyke from West Road to Campground.
Supervisor Dan O'Leary said the $1 million project will cost the township about $254,000.
"It's in our strategic plan and it's critical," he said.
The 2015 project will repave that section of Van Dyke, add curbs and sidewalks and an additional lane.
As the Van Dyke corridor comes closer to the reality of its strategic plan for the downtown area, O'Leary said 2013 might be a good time to establish a Downtown Development Authority.
"This will give us some funding mechanisms," he said.
Washington could have its road projects completed even sooner if other communities that were approved for a TIP project back out. If that turns out to be the case, O'Leary said he would like to bump up the 2015 project so it will be completed sooner.
The board voted unanimously Nov. 28 to submit its 2015 TIP project to the county.
