New union approved
in Bruce Township
by DENNIS A. SETTERThe Bruce Township Administrative Employees Association, a new union in the township, had its contract approved at the Sept. 18 Board of Trustees meeting by a vote of 4-1.
Observer Managing Editor
Bruce Township Treasurer Debbie Obrecht voted against the contract saying the impact of it is an additional cost to the township of $24,000 over the next four years.
"Our wages are based on 35 hours, our benefits in many cases exceed most communities in our local area," said Obrecht. "To lock in those rich benefits plus a wage scale exceeding inflation is not fiscally responsible."
The contract, that will have its final signing in about two weeks but was made effective as of Sept. 18, marks the first official contract by the new union. The only other union in the township is the Bruce Township Firefighter Union Local 4076.
The new union is made up of four positions<a general office clerk, accounting assistant, deputy clerk and deputy treasurer. Only three of those positions are filled with no plans to fill the the general office clerk at this time, said Clerk Susan Brockmann.
The contract, which expires June 30, 2017, keeps all current benefits the same and includes no raises but does introduce a pay scale that wasn't previously in place for the employees.
"You have to have some kind of pay scale for a union contract," said Brockmann. "That's part of being in a union, any of the positions are going to require some type of knowledge of where they're going to end up."
