Bruce Twp. Open House with new date to coincide with Fire Prevention Week
by DEBI MARTONEThe 4th annual Bruce Township Open House will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the township park.

Residents, friends and families are invited to attend the free event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, which was formerly held during the summer, has been changed to coincide with Fire Prevention Week, which begins the next day.
The newly constructed Fire Station 3 will be formally dedicated in honor of former fire chief, Floyd Shotwell, at 11 a.m. during the Open House. Shotwell retired this year after serving as the township fire chief for 41 years.
The fire hall, as well as the township hall, will be open for tours and firefighters will be on hand to show off their equipment and trucks. The Romeo-Washington-Bruce Parks and Recreation Department will host a free Hot Dog Social. Parks and Rec volunteers will also assist kids with a Bounce House and a craft.
Those with a favorite chili recipe are invited to take part in a Chili Cook Off. Proceeds from the entry fee for the cook off will benefit the Romeo Goodfellows. A bake sale will also take place to benefit the Goodfellows as well.
Guests will also be treated to a corn roast, compliments of Van Houtte Farms. The Friends of the Romeo Library will host a book sale, and volunteers from the Samaritan House will also collect canned goods for their Thanks for Giving fundraiser.
A roaming magician will perform and the kids will have the chance to play games and win prizes, including a dog house that will be built on-site.
"We have a lot going on and it will be a nice day for the families," said Dorothy Sochowicz, deputy clerk and one of the organizers of the event.
Further information and an entry form for the Chili Cook Off can be found on the township's website<www.brucetwp.org.
