WT officials say no to
supporting new landfill
by KIMBERLY SCHERERWashington Township voted not to support a landfill within the township following a survey from County Executive Mark Hackel.
Observer Special Writer
During an Oct. 16 meeting, Supervisor Dan O'Leary said Hackel sent a letter to Macomb County's communities to see if there is an interest to host a landfill among any of the towns. Also asked, was if there is any support of a new landfill sited in Macomb County. Washington voted not to support a new landfill in the county as well.
The topic of another landfill came up from waste hauler Rizzo Environmental Services' interest to develop a new 600-acre landfill across Gratiot Road from Waste Management's Pine Tree Acre landfill in Lenox Township.
Lenox Township officials passed a resolution during their Sept. 3 meeting stating they do not support another landfill in their community.
In a letter to the township, Hackel wrote that there is enough capacity in the current landfill for the next 5 to 10 years in accordance to the capacity requirements of Act 451. He also stated that none of the communities within the county requested to amend the county's solid waste management plan, and there is no requirement from the Department of Environmental Quality to do so at this time.
Washington's Board voted no unanimously to both of Hackel's inquiries.
