Owner plans store near
Bruce Township tavern by SHAUN BYRON
The Bruce Township Planning Commission has given the owner of BJ's Saloon the OK to move forward on a planned store upon meeting certain conditions.Observer Staff Writer The commission's recommendation for approval was made at a regular meeting held Wednesday, July 26. Planners told owner Alex Jovanoski for the site plan to move forward he must meet the Michigan Department of Transportation's requirements for acceleration and/or deceleration lanes. Those requirements must also be given to the township. Jovanoski must also record the easement allowing for the property to drain onto an off-site retention pond on a residentially-zoned parcel he owns. Plans show that the store will be 6,000 square-feet and the structure located on the southeast side of the tavern will be torn down. While the bar has been open for years, Jovanoski has only owned it for the past 11. Greg Shotwell, who is aiding Jovanoski in the site plan approval process and will help with the construction of the store, told the commission they will seek a demolition permit soon and that the site will be cleaned up. When asked why the decision was made to add a store to the site, both Jovanoski and Shotwell said it is a much-needed improvement to the area. "There is nothing out there, it's a great place," Shotwell said.
