TREE FIRE. As the polls were heating up on Nov. 4, a tree in the Romeo Cemetery did the same. Around 4 p.m., the Bruce-Romeo Fire Department responded to calls of an old tree that was smoldering. Firefighters at the scene controlled the burning, but couldn't put it out because it was burning the interior of the partially-rotted tree. To prevent any further burning, the tree had to be taken down. Village Clerk Marian McLaughlin said the tree likely caught fire due to embers from burning leaves entering the old tree. The tree joins others that have been damaged due to wind and ice storms, which has prompted the village to plant 36 new trees in the cemetery over the last couple of years.
