ROOFING PROJECT

Above and at right, roofers from Seal Tight Construction replace the roof on the Bancroft-Stranahan Museum on Church Street last week. A fundraising effort brought in $2,000 of the $5,000 price tag for the roof but museum officials were forced into taking the money out of a bank account so the roof could be replaced right away. "We were afraid we would have a leak and lose artifacts inside," said Richard Beringer, curator of the Romeo Arts and Archives Museum. Most of the roof was curled and flaking off due to improper ventilation when the roof was replaced about 15 years ago. Prior to the reroofing project, which was started and finished last week, somebody had to be hired to capture squirrels that had been nesting in the attic, said Beringer. The squirrels had caused damage to the insulation around the heating duct system. "They chewed a hole in the side of the building and came in and nested," said Beringer, adding that they only damaged one of the ducts. Fundraising will continue to replace the money from the museum bank account. The museum is a non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible. Call (586) 752-4111 for more information.
