Basketball team honored at end of year banquet
By RICK DESOTELL Observer Sports Writer
In celebration of a season of hard work and dedication, the Romeo High boys' basketball teams gathered with friends and family recently at the end of the year banquet.
Senior guard Cody Cushingberry, who averaged 24 points a game, earned top honors for the varsity team. Cushingberry was named the Team MVP, All-MAC first team and first team All-Macomb County locally and was named to The Detroit News Class-A All-Metro East team.
"We've had a Cushingberry on this team for five years now,'' Romeo Coach Dale Teller said, who's team finished with a 14-9 overall record. "There's another one coming, but for now we'll have to see what life will be like without one for a while.''
Junior center Buddy Scarborough also received some recognition, having been named honorable mention All-Macomb County.
"I think the other coaches around the county thought Buddy's work ethic and tenacity during the games was worth rewarding and I couldn't agree more, said Teller.''
Zack Hayes and Scarborough were selected honorable mention All-MAC.
Scarborough and senior guard Adam Chavez were selected as the team's "captains" award winners.
"Most Improved" went to junior guard Josh Tanner.
"Next year will be interesting from many standpoints,'' said Teller. "First we're moving up into the MAC Red and second it looks like our best scorers coming back and moving up are the big guys. Over the last four or five years our guards (the Cushingberrys, Justin and Cody) have dominated our scoring. The future looks bright I think. The freshman class was 19-1 this year, the JV went 15-5 and I know there is a ton of talent in the eighth grade classes including another Cushingberry, so we have a lot to look forward to.''
Chris Rowell (13 points a game) was the junior varsity MVP.
Tom Sharples (11 points, four blocks and 12 rebounds) was the "captains" winner.
Brandon Gaffke (4.7 points and five rebounds a game) was the teams "Most Improved" player throughout the season. And the defensive player of the year or "Mr. Hustle" award went to Aaron Jacobsen who averaged seven rebounds and six steals per-game for the junior varsity that finished the year with a 15-5 record, 12-2 in the MAC White.
"It was a very good year because the team greatly improved throughout the season,'' JV Coach Clyde Cushingberry said. "These kids should make very good varsity players the next few seasons.''
