Boys’ basketball team is back on the Red Division

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
      Back in the Red
The Romeo High boys’ varsity basketball team is back in the Macomb Area Conference’s Red Division this season after a two-year hiatus in the White.
The varsity was 16-7 a year ago, 9-5 in the White and good enough for third place.
“We think Grosse Pointe North will be the pre-season favorite,’’ said Romeo Coach Dale Teller. “But it’s really a toss up this year. Eisenhower has a center that’s 6-foot-10 and Chippewa Valley has a lot of talent so it’s going to be a battle from start to finish. We really don’t know how good we’re going to be this year. We’re young, but we have some talent and should compete every night.’’
       Romeo Roster:
       #4, Junior, G, Dan Delamielleure
Coaches comments: “Dan’s a great athlete. Transferred out, then transferred back in, so he won’t be eligible until Jan. 17, but should help us when he gets back.’’
       #5, Senior, G, Jake Salaysay
Comments: “Had a very good pre-season. Not very big at 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds so we have to use him wisely and not get him beat up too much.’’
       #10, Junior, G/F, Chris Rowell
Comments: “A football guy and a very good athlete. Can shoot well from the outside.’’
       #11, Junior, F, Josh Volpe
Comments: “Another good athlete. Should see a lot of time at the number three (small forward) spot.’’
#14, Senior, G, Kenny Hirschmann (captain)
Comments: “Kenny got roughed up a bit during football so he’s a little hobbled right now, but he should help us a lot with his quickness and poise.’’
       #15, Senior, G/F, Dante Russell
Comments: “Dante transferred in last year and will be eligible for the first time. He should help us out a lot, especially defensively.’’
       #20, Sophomore, F/C, Doug Sharples
Comments: “He doesn’t have a lot of varsity experience, but he could surprise some people this year.’’
       #24, Junior, F, Aaron Jacobson
Comments: “Big body and big rebounder.’’
       #25, Senior, G, Josh Tanner
Comments: “Very dangerous with dribble penetration.’’
       #30, Sophomore, F, Skyler Hake
Comments: “Another football guy that is a little banged up right now. Played significant minutes last year as freshman.’’
       #32, Freshman, G, Blake Cushingberry
Comments: “Comes from a great family of basketball players and looks to be every bit as good as his predecessors. If he can handle the pressure he might even start the year at point guard for us.’’
#50, Senior, C, Bill Scarborough (captain)
Comments: “We need Bill to have a good year. He will face some tough big guys this year. If he can stay out of foul trouble and play with good technique he could mean a lot to our success.’’
       #52, Junior, C/F, Tom Sharples
Comments: “We need him to play a couple of positions this year. He can play center, but Tom has to be strong when he’s in there or he can get pushed around because of his slight build.’’
The Bulldogs open the season Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Lake Orion. Their first home contest is Dec. 10, against Rochester.
“We have a lot of football players so we should be a physical team night in and night out,’’ said Teller. “We spend one and a half-hours of a two-hour practice on defense alone so we should be a hard working blue-collar type team. If we can get some consistency at the offensive end and get some easy baskets off our defense we could be a tough team to beat.’’
