Boys' team expected to be experienced, athletic

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
Depth, athleticism and experience will be the strength this year for the Romeo High varsity basketball team as members prepare for one of the toughest schedules in recent memory.
Last year the Bulldogs, who finished 11-11 overall, 6-6 in the MAC Red, were a very physical group that used their strength and toughness to get things done, but this season they are a little more athletic and want to run.
"There's a lot of potential and experience on this team; we just need to put it all together,'' said Coach Dale Teller. "We should be able to run all night long with the depth we have.''
As far as the lineup goes, Romeo will be led by sophomore Blake Cushingberry, who started all 22 games last season as a freshman and the Sharples brothers Tom and Doug.
Junior Skyler Hake and senior Josh Volpe have three years of varsity experience and will see a lot of playing time, but the real key could be the play of seniors Danny DeLamielleure, Chris Rowell, Branden Gaffke and Aaron Jacobson and the leadership they bring.
"We have a good mix of incoming juniors (Steve Malburg, Austin Langley and Jake Schirmer) that are really pushing the returning players,'' said Teller, whose six-year record at Romeo is an impressive 78-25. "We have a tough schedule this season, but this is an energetic bunch that thinks they can play with anyone. It should be fun.''
The Bulldogs will open the season at home with Lake Orion on Dec. 6, but if you want to check out their progress sooner you can watch Romeo scrimmage Dec. 2 at home at 5:30 p.m.
