Boys' basketball players
given awards for season

by RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer
Family and friends gathered together recently to celebrate the end of another successful basketball season at Romeo High.
And what a season it was.
The varsity finished the year as the MAC Red champions with a 10-2 league record and were 15-6 overall. It was the third league title in six years for the varsity.
Things are going even smoother at the lower levels; the junior varsity (16-4) won its seventh straight league title under coach Clyde Cushingberry and the freshmen were 20-0 under the direction of coach Brewer.
As for the awards given out, the 2006 Team Captain award was given to Steve Malburg and the MVP award was given to sophomore Blake Cushingberry, who was also second-team All-Macomb County and First Team MAC Red.
"Steve came to practice every day and pushed the starters to practice harder,'' said Romeo coach Dale Teller. "We expect big things from him next year. Blake has started every game on varsity since his freshman year. He makes the other players better because opponents look to stop him.''
The rest of the awards were:
       All-County Third Team: Doug Sharples.
       Honorable Mention All-County: Tom Sharples
All-MAC Red First Team: Doug Sharples.
Honorable Mention All-MAC Red: Josh Volpe and Tom Sharples.
"The players feel confident in our approach,'' said Teller. "This summer will be important for incoming underclassman as it gives them a chance to appreciate the quickness and size difference at varsity level. Our foundation is really solid right now. We've got a lot of good players coming back and the program at the lower levels have become consistent winners.''
