Plenty of talent returns
to this year boys' BB team

By RICK DESOTELL
Observer Sports Writer

Last year the Romeo High School varsity basketball team set the Macomb County basketball scene on its ear by becoming just the sixth team in county history to go undefeated (20-0) during the regular season, only to be knocked out in the first round of districts by Utica Eisenhower on a half-court prayer at the buzzer.
"Last year was more taxing than you would think," said Romeo Coach Dale Teller, who did not shower or shave during his team's streak last year. "The pressure was enormous on everyone because the streak becomes a beast of its own. It seemed like the whole world was watching to see if we could pull it off and every team you play becomes world beaters all of a sudden and wants to be the team that knocked you off like Ike did in the playoffs. But last year did give us one very good lesson and that's how to survive under pressure. We know what it takes to win."
Four starters are gone from last year's team but plenty of talent still remains starting with six-foot senior, All-County guard Cody Cushingberry.
The rest of the seniors<Jon Kappa, Ryan Mrdeza, Zack Hayes, Adam Chavez and Adam Farrell<will all play key roles this year along with juniors Ken Hirschmann, Josh Tanner, Jake Salaysay and Buddy Scarborough.
"I expect to use everybody on the roster, but we probably will rotate 10 every night," Teller said. "We don't have a lot of size, but we hope to make the other team run all 90-feet with us and run them ragged. In other words, we're not going to change a thing from a year ago except play better defense."
Romeo, which has already scrimmaged with Port Huron, will scrimmage again this Friday evening at home against Sterling Heights. The junior varsity will get things started at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity team at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs open the regular season on the road Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Rochester and then won't play again until their first home game on the 19th when they host Chippewa Valley.
After another 10-day break, Romeo will travel to L'Anse Creuse North to compete in the Crusader Christmas Tournament. The Bulldogs begin the tournament Monday, Dec. 29, at 5:30 p.m., and then again on Saturday at a time yet to be determined by outcome.
