Potential's there, now Bulldogs have to make it happen
by RICK DESOTELL Observer Sports Writer
If you believe the pre-season hype it seems the only thing that can stop the Romeo High basketball team from repeating as Macomb Area Conference Red division champions this season are the Bulldogs themselves.
Romeo is a near consensus favorite to win the Red based on a couple of returning all-league performers<Blake Cushingberry (15 points and eight rebounds a game) and Doug Sharples (14 points and seven rebounds), along with part time starters Steve Malburg (3 points and 3 assists) and Jake Schirmer (6 points per-game). Throw in transfer Nick Kosovich from Utica who averaged 7 points a game for the Chieftains a year ago and junior Brent Newsom and the Bulldogs have plenty of potential.
Cushingberry was a third team All-State selection a year ago and is a preseason all-MAC selection by machoops.com as is the 6-foot-4 Sharples who is a much better scorer than people realize.
"The big word is potential,'' said Romeo Coach Dale Teller. "Our goal is to get better every week. Our kids know the games are played on the court and not on paper. Brent Newsom has played very well in preseason and has added a whole new dimension to our team. If we can defend on a consistent basis we will be tough to beat.''
Romeo's main competition in the Red should come from, in order, Chippewa Valley which is led by center Jason Doran and guard Chris Lemm; Macomb Dakota, which won the White with a 10-2 record last season and now moves up to compete in the Red, is led by 6-foot-6 senior forward James Stallons, who averaged 11 points per game a year ago; Utica, Eisenhower, L'Anse Creuse and Grosse Pointe North fill out the rest of the Red.
Romeo has done well in the regular season recently, having won four league titles in the last seven years and has not had a losing season since 1999. But the Bulldogs have not fared well in the post season and have not won a district title in 20 years.
"Overall our program has continued to improve thanks to coaches Marv Cushingberry, Joe Malburg, Clyde Cushingberry, and Fred Brewer,'' said Teller. "I know we haven't done well in the post season recently but I believe we have the best group of character players in the county. Right now we've got great senior leadership in Jake Schirmer, Steve Malburg, and Doug Sharples and we've told them this is their team and they have responded well. This could be the year we do something in the post season, but we have to keep our feet on the ground and not get too high during the regular season.''
Juniors Joe Wilson, Derrick Gaffke, Tyler Armstrong and Jesse Schneider along with sophomores Nathan Saliga and Ricky Roth and seniors Ben Hessell and Austin Langley fill out this year's roster.
The Bulldogs open the season Dec. 5, at Lake Orion.
