The board voted 6-0 at a Nov. 20 special meeting to hire Linda Sickles as the part-time interim director for Romeo District Library. She is expected to be hired on Dec. 1 and begin Dec. 2.
Sickles, a Rochester Hills resident, retired from the director position at the Orion Township Public Library after a nearly 32-year tenure.
Board President Elizabeth Miller said after speaking with 10 candidates from around the state, four of them referred Sickles. She said Sickles successfully passed background checks.
"We felt that Ms. Sickles would be able to help us move the library forward in the direction the board is looking to go," she said.
The board approved of Sickles receiving $45 an hour and will not work more than 20 hours a week.
Miller said qualities such as Sickles' experience in a community of similar size and population to Romeo stood out as well as her expressing an interest in helping the board find a permanent director.
Miller said Sickles will also assist in gathering input from library staff on their needs, file the library's state aid report, help fine-tune the library's strategic plan and improve marketing and communications.
Kristin Valyi-Hax resigned from the Romeo library director position as of Oct. 25. When speaking to the Village of Romeo Board of Trustees at its Nov. 19 meeting, Miller said the Library Board wishes Valyi-Hax well.
"The library, in spite of this transitional period, will continue to operate openly, transparently and within the confines of our legal authority," Miller said.
